SMS BIO
The Concept PDF Print E-mail

Our studies have till now been concerned with the theme "waiting time". Our initial studies lead us to study this phenonemon in the context of the cinema.

First we did situated fieldresearch in a big Copenhagen cinema where we examined the domain closer with observations and did a workshop to get relevant design ideas.

Next step was to develop our idea and choose a concept we wanted to test with a prototype. We had a lot of input and ideas to develop our concept. What we choose to elaborate on was interaction, contribution and sharing. These keywords inspired us to come up with the SMS-Rating system for cinema-users.

So what kind of experience are we designing for? The cinema is a place where people come to have an experience typically together with other people. People are in a passive state where what they mainly have to do is sit and "take in". We want to take advantage of the time people spend waiting before they enter the cinema. There are a limited number of activities. You can go to the candy-store, the bar for a drink or you can sit down and watch trailers on the trailer-screens. But these you will probably see when you enter the cinema anyways.

As a contrast to the passiveness we want to develop some kind of engaging, interactive and social system enabling people to share their movie- expectations and judgements. We think the cinema already has plenty of reviews from movie-experts but why not ask the cinema users what they think? We want to enable the users to share their oppinion through a userfriendly sms-system. The sms-technology is something people are already accostomed to.

Our prototype was tested in Aarhus second biggest cinema BioCity with a projector in the cinemas waiting-hall. Though this seemed to catch peoples attention we believe the user-feedback would attract more attention if it was shown on trailerscreens. By embeeding the user-feedback on all the trailer-screens around the cinema it will be noticable by everyone.

We want to make the cinema a more democratic space where people are able to share their opinions as if they were on a movie-portal on the Internet. Inspired by big movie-portals like Imdb.com we want the users to be able to rate movies with stars as if they were the movie-critics. In fact we want the users to be the movie critics.

Another part of the concept is movie dating. With this service we want to help the people that normally wouldn't go to the cinema by themselves or simply offer all people a service where they can find somone with similar interests. Through our portal we imagine a gateway for people with similar interest enabling them to meet in the cinema and share the movie experience. Who hasn't tried going on a date with someone you didn't share your movie-preferences with. The guy wanting to see James Bond or Transformers and the girl eager to see Sex and the City or the newest Twiligt movie. Through this service you can request a movie date and you can meet up before the movie.

The cinema is a place where you go to share an experience together with other people. Our concept aims to facilitate this sharing of experiences in the cinema. All in all we just want to make the cinema a more interactive, engaging and fun place to be!
